Some ESY conversations start like this:
Parent:
“What does the district offer for ESY?”
And just like that, the whole conversation starts moving in the wrong direction.
Because that is not the real
question.
The real question is:
What does your child need?
A lot of parents get pulled into ESY conversations that sound tidy, efficient, and already figured out (predetermined)
District: This is the ESY program.
This is a schedule.
This is a location.
This is a plan.
And sometimes all of that gets presented so quickly
and practiced that it almost feels rude to stop and ask whether any of it actually fits your child.
But that is exactly what you need to do... pause.
Because an ESY program can sound official and still not be individualized (Let that sink in).
It can check the ESY box and still miss your child.
It can look organized on paper and still leave you wondering:
Is this really about what my child’s needs?
Or is this just what the district does every
year?
That is what we'll talk about in the next live episode of The Art of
Advocacy, ESY is Built Around Your Child, NOT a Calendar
We're going to look at the kind
of ESY questions parents do not always get invited to ask.
🔷 Not just how many days.
🔷 Not just how
long each day.
But bigger questions about fit.
❓Questions about location.
❓Questions about support.
❓Questions about whether the plan actually makes sense for your child in real life.
Sometimes what gets called “the ESY program”
is really just the district’s default.
