There can be a disconnect between what we see in our children at home and how they’re perceived at school.

Using Video to Create Understanding

One effective way to bring the home and school worlds together is through video. 

For example, if your child reads effortlessly at home but struggles in class, record a video of them reading and share it with their teacher. 

This way, the teacher gets a clearer picture of your child’s abilities.

🟢 But Wait! That’s not enough.
Ask the teacher to do the same and share videos from the classroom.

❇️ NEXT IMPORTANT STEP:  

Set up a time with the teacher to watch these videos together. 

This can lead to a more open conversation about why your child might perform differently in each place. 

➕ PLUS, it’s a great opportunity to learn from each other and develop strategies that work in both settings.

This makes it easier to discuss effective strategies with teachers and pinpoint where adjustments can help.

Navigating Assistive Technology Tools

• Schools may provide resources like Chromebooks, educational apps, or other assistive devices that aren’t always available at home.
• If your child uses certain tools at school, request that the school provide the same tools for them to use at home.
• Consistent access to the same technology helps your child feel comfortable and confident using it in both settings.

 Keep the Conversation Going with Technology

Regular communication with your child’s teacher is key. Here are a few ways to make it easier:

• Use emails, a shared notebook, or quick texts—whatever works best to stay connected.

• Consider a shared Google Doc (or similar platform) where you, the teacher, and support staff can add notes, updates, and reminders.

• This approach helps create a fuller picture of your child’s day, making it easier to share insights, celebrate small wins, and address concerns.

Observation and Participation

If you get the chance, observe your child in the classroom. 

It can be a real eye-opener, giving you a clearer picture of   what might be challenging for your child, and what’s helping them succeed. 

This kind of firsthand experience offers valuable insight that you just can’t get from written reports or quick meetings.

Keep Advocating

The journey toward inclusive education doesn’t happen overnight. 

It’s a continuous process, and it’s okay to keep asking questions, pushing for changes, and advocating for your child so they are safe, happy, and learning with their classmates.
