Okay, now I don't know what's going on.

My guess is in the past couple of weeks you received your child's IEP "Progress" Report.  Did you rush to open it up to see the news about how well your child is doing?

Or did you kinda glance at it, sigh with a bit of disgust and wonder why these no-nothing "Progress" Reports get sent home any way. 
 

The "Progress" Report may have a line graph with a few data points which makes it look more official, and have very little details or an explanation of how much progress your child has really made.

It's easy to feel frustrated and out of the loop, wondering if you child has learned much since the last IEP "Progress" Report.

Let me ask you something, "Do you wake up in the morning and ask yourself, What is the purpose of IEP Progress Reports?"

Okay, maybe that's not what you think of when you wake up in the morning... however it is important to know why we want meaningful progress reports:

#1 We want to make sure your child is really learning.

#2 The data collected can tell us if  the materials and methods we use for teaching are working well for your child and 

#3 We can see if your child's IEP is effective.

Of course, just getting IEP Progress Reports more frequently doesn't mean you're going to learn anything helpful if the report doesn't tell you anything meaningful.

You need to decide what information will be helpful for you to know.  Different parents are looking for different types of quantitative and qualitative data and information.

Here are 4 questions that you can ask at IEP meetings:

? How can we gather evidence to show how well my child is progressing towards meeting their objectives and goals?

? What tools can we use to collect this evidence?

? What useful information will be included in the IEP Progress Report?

? How often will the evidence be gathered, analyzed and reported to the family?
