"We moved around a lot, and my parents did not ever have me in the special education system. I got through college, at about 19. And the next year when I was 20, I was institutionalized for what was intended to be the rest of my life.

So I had hoped to go to graduate school, but my post baccalaureate education was all in long term care facilities. I was in for institutions over this period.

After four and a half years, the facility I was in burned down, and I have an alibi for that fire. It wasn't me, but the first few of us to find beds somewhere else got out. And that's really the only reason I'm free today." ~ Cal Montgomery

"One thing that I think is really important to acknowledge is that much of the time whether or not we move to restraint and seclusion, it's not actually about safety. You think it is. Most people think that it is...I would argue that restraint and seclusion are the consequences and choices we make much earlier in the process."

"They (teachers) turn to seclusion restraint, which are ones of violence and escalation of violence. And they try to create safety doing one of the most unsafe things they can do. Seclusion, restraint, results in injuries and death."
