ESY Services: 5 Red Flags That You Need to Watch Out For

individualized.
If your district is like many districts around the country this is how the conversation goes about ESY services.
Special educator or Administrator: Yes, your son is eligible for Extended Year Services.
Parent: Great! What does that look like?
Special educator or Administrator: ESY services start on June 6th and go for four weeks. It’s from 8:30 - 11:30 am, four days a week, Monday through Thursday. It’s great because students and staff will be out before the Fourth of July weekend.
Parent: Does he just come to his school and his special teacher will be with him in the summer school class?
Special educator or Administrator: No, ESY is different than summer school. All the elementary students who are eligible for ESY are bused to Forever Elementary school for their services. We aren’t sure who the staff will be yet.
Parent: Oh, I don’t know how that will work. That’s not what I pictured would happen for Extended School Year.
Special educator or Administrator: Yes, that’s how we have to do it.
Parent: Hmmm…
