How do I get meaningful communication from school? 2:50 timestamp
1. Write down what you want to know from the staff.
2. Decide how often do you want to get information from the staff.
3. Request an IEP meeting to discuss school-home communication.
4. Decide on how information will be share, how frequently, who will communicate with family, what information will be shared.
5. Have the decisions written in the IEP.
How to know about feeding & swallowing issues at school? 13:26 timestamp
1. Request an IEP meeting and decide if your child needs services for feeding & swallowing concerns from a SLP or OT.
2. Make sure the school nurse is involved and that your child has a Health Plan at school.
3. Request doctor provide ways staff can be proactive to prevent feeding & swallowing issues and steps to take if there are concerns. Include this in the IEP.
4. Train all staff that work with your child, including the cafeteria workers as to what to do when.
How to advise parents to balance the time spent in pull out services versus class time missed for those therapies? 15:15 timestamp
The short and sweet answer is, have it written in your child's IEP that the special education and related services be brought to the general education classroom – "push-in" services.
