Lessons From Stephen Hinkle's Life as captured by the graphic artist, Sherrill Knezel.
When Stephen Hinkle was asked on our live show how students can be better self-advocates, he replied,
"We need to make sure that self-advocates challenge the limits of the system. That they understand how to make change.
They need to understand, not to just take no for an answer and to really speak out.
We need to make sure kids with disabilities are the squeaky wheel.
And we need to make sure adults listen to them, instead of assuming that they don't want to be heard."
Stephen also shared some ways to meet individual student needs during distance learning. He suggested having kids of parents that work outside of the home to be able to log on during the evening hours for schoolwork so their parents can be there to help.
We know many students don't have access to reliable internet or cell phone service. I loved Stephen's idea of checking to see if the family has a DVD player and if so, having teachers transfer their video lessons to a DVD and mail it to the child.
