Have you noticed many people are trained to use a deficit lens to identify and remediate students’ learning and behavioral “deficits”? Then these “deficits” are used to rationalize the segregation of
students.
It’s past time to change the lens so we can identify student strengths, interests and talents.
But you know what? That’s not even enough.
We need to go beyond just recognizing strengths to using instructional strategies that tap into these, so students can learn beside their
friends, in general education classrooms.
