Is your stomach starting to churn just thinking about the next school year?
Are you having that approach-avoidance feeling - like, you know it will help if you do some things this spring, but the thought of thinking about a new grade, a new school is too much to deal with?
Then you'll want to take a look at last Thursday's live show with Kiki McGough! Click here for the video. Listen to the audio version, click here.
Kiki shared some gems. Here are just three of
them.
Think of what worked well with your child when he/she was at school, or at home. Make sure next year's staff know this before school starts. Don't make them reinvent the wheel!
Take a tour of your child's school, or look around the new classroom they'll be in. Take photos, or have your child take photos. Use these over the summer when you talk about the new school/class for the
fall.
It helps so much to have a small group conversation with the general education and special education teachers, and yourself before school starts. You want to walk away with a good picture and understanding of what your child's day looks like.
You can begin feeling more confident about next year, right now. You know when you are proactive, transitions go much smoother.Click here for your free eBook. On page 8 find a tip for parents about the playground.
When you're on page 13 you'll learn some self-advocacy tips for your child - yes, they can be involved in the transition process.
On page 18 of the Transitions eBook is one of my favorite tips for children moving up to middle school - this
can also be used with other ages.
BONUS: At the end of the Transitions eBook I give you a mind-set activity that can sooo ease your stress about transitions. You'll find that on pages 28-29. Click here for your free eBook.
